Trump Considers New Strikes on Iran

(MENAFN) President Donald Trump is reportedly evaluating the possibility of authorizing fresh military strikes against Iran in response to the government’s suppression of protests and riots sparked by surging inflation, a media outlet reported on Saturday, citing US officials familiar with the matter.

According to the newspaper, Trump has recently been briefed on several potential options, including attacks on non-military sites in Tehran, though no final decision has yet been made.

The president has issued repeated warnings toward Iran in the past and on Saturday expressed public support for demonstrators. “Iran is looking at FREEDOM, perhaps like never before. The USA stands ready to help!!!” Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform.

The protests began on December 28 after the collapse of Iran’s currency triggered steep increases in food and other essential goods. Demonstrations quickly escalated into widespread turmoil, with rioters clashing with police and targeting government buildings in Tehran and other cities. Authorities shut down internet and phone services nationwide on Thursday in an attempt to contain the violence.

Iran has accused the US and Israel of instigating the unrest. “Believing that the Islamic Republic of Iran is like other countries, the US is pursuing the same measures by encouraging certain individuals to create chaos and riots,” Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi wrote on X on Saturday.

Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei dismissed Trump’s threats as “baseless,” declaring that the nation “will not back down against vandals.”
