EU Calls for Restraint to Prevent Escalation in Middle East
At a press briefing in Brussels, EU spokesperson Anouar El Anouni refrained from commenting on hypothetical scenarios but emphasized that any military escalation carries the risk of serious consequences for regional stability. He stressed diplomacy as the preferred approach, reaffirming the EU’s commitment to peace, security, and stability in the region.
El Anouni stated: “The EU urges all state and non-state actors to respect international law, act with restraint and avoid any actions that could escalate tensions in the Middle East.” He also underscored that the principles of sovereignty and the UN Charter must be upheld under all circumstances.
Pressure from the US and Israel on Iran has grown in recent months, particularly following nationwide Iranian protests in late December over deteriorating economic and living conditions. Officials from both countries have also made statements suggesting ambitions to see the end of Iran’s political system, which has been in place since 1979.
