Israel Says It Killed Senior Aide of Hezbollah Leader
In an official statement, the army said it had "eliminated Ali Yusuf Harshi, personal secretary and nephew of Hezbollah Secretary-General Naim Qassem." The military further characterized Harshi as "a close associate and adviser" to Qassem, asserting that he played "a central role in managing and securing his office."
Hezbollah has yet to respond to or confirm the claim.
The strike took place late Wednesday, when Israeli warplanes hit the Lailaki-Kafaat area in southern Beirut, with explosions reverberating across the capital, Lebanon's state news agency reported.
The assault was part of a broader wave of violence that, according to the Lebanese Civil Defense, left at least 254 people dead and 1,165 others wounded in Israeli attacks across Lebanon, including Beirut, on Wednesday alone. The Lebanese Health Ministry placed the cumulative death toll from Israeli strikes since March 2 at 1,739, with 5,873 additional casualties recorded.
Wednesday's attacks came despite a US-Iran ceasefire agreement announced the same day — an accord that some international leaders are now pressing to extend to Lebanon, even as both Washington and Tel Aviv resist such an expansion.
Israel has maintained an active air campaign and ground offensive in southern Lebanon since Hezbollah launched a cross-border attack on March 2, continuing military operations in defiance of a ceasefire that had formally taken effect in November 2024.
