Israeli Strike on Lebanon Triggers Quake in Northern Israel

(MENAFN) A powerful explosion in southern Lebanon sent tremors across northern Israel on Tuesday, rattling the region as Tel Aviv presses on with what critics describe as systematic ceasefire violations in the country.

"The Geological Institute of Israel recorded a minor earthquake in the country's north following an explosion carried out by the Israeli army," an Israeli broadcaster said.

The Israeli broadcaster reported that the strike deliberately targeted a large underground tunnel constructed by Hezbollah in southern Lebanon — a significant piece of cross-border infrastructure that the military moved to neutralize.

The tunnel was confirmed to sit approximately 10 kilometers — roughly 6.2 miles — from the border and did not extend into Israeli territory, the broadcaster added.

Despite a fragile truce technically in place, Israel has continued conducting military operations inside Lebanon, raising serious questions about the durability of the ceasefire framework.

US President Donald Trump first announced a 10-day ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon on April 17, before later confirming Thursday that the pause would be extended by an additional three weeks.

The truce came after Israel launched a full-scale offensive on March 2 — a campaign that has exacted a devastating toll. According to official figures, at least 2,534 people have been killed and 7,863 wounded, with more than 1.6 million displaced across Lebanon.
