Israeli Army Leadership Admits Failures in October 2023 Events

(MENAFN) Senior figures in Israel’s military leadership have publicly acknowledged that the armed forces failed in their response during the events of October 7, 2023, describing it as a major operational breakdown.

During a handover ceremony at an airbase in central Israel, the chief of staff and both outgoing and incoming air force commanders addressed the incident, with the outgoing air force commander officially transferring authority to his successor. The remarks were reported by local media outlets.

The chief of staff stated that the military as a whole did not succeed in its mission to defend the country during the attack. He emphasized that the incident remains a persistent responsibility for the armed forces and requires full accountability and investigation.

He further noted that Israeli officials widely regard the events of October 7 as the most severe intelligence and military failure in the country’s history, significantly affecting perceptions of the military domestically and internationally.

The outgoing air force commander said that the complete understanding of what occurred would only be possible through an independent external investigation. He described the day as the most devastating since the Holocaust and acknowledged personal responsibility for the failures under his command, adding that the air force was unprepared to respond to fighting that broke out within Israeli territory.

He also stressed that only an impartial commission of inquiry could properly examine the events and restore public trust in security institutions.

Political debate continues within Israel over how such an investigation should be conducted. Opposition groups have called for a fully independent state commission appointed through the judiciary, while the government has instead supported the creation of a politically appointed inquiry panel, a move that has faced criticism over concerns about neutrality.
