Israel Counts Special Ballots as Election Results Remain Unsettled

(MENAFN) More than 29,000 double-envelope ballots have been counted in Israel’s election, representing approximately 6% of the nearly 500,000 votes submitted through this procedure, with the remaining count expected to finish by Thursday afternoon, according to reports.

A total of 29,253 special ballots had been processed, according to figures cited in local media reports.

Double-envelope voting allows eligible voters to cast ballots outside their registered polling stations. Those using the procedure include soldiers, diplomats, police officers and residents displaced from their usual locations.

To safeguard the integrity of the vote, election officials first verify the voter’s identification details on the outer envelope to prevent duplicate voting. The outer envelope is then removed from the ballot, which remains anonymous before being included in the count.

The outstanding ballots could affect the final distribution of parliamentary seats among individual parties and alter the balance between the competing political blocs. The Central Elections Committee expects the counting process to be completed by the afternoon, according to reports.

Preliminary projections based on the regular ballots showed Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s bloc securing 53 seats in the 120-member Knesset. The opposition alliance led by Yashar party leader Gadi Eisenkot was projected to obtain 48 seats, while predominantly Arab parties were expected to win a combined 19 seats.

Neither of the two main blocs was projected to reach the 61 seats required to command a parliamentary majority, leaving the final distribution of seats significant for the next stage of government formation.

The Joint List was projected to win 12 seats, while the United Arab List, also known as Ra’am, was expected to secure seven. Together, the two parties would achieve a record combined representation of 19 seats.

Voter participation reached 77.7%, marking the highest turnout since 1999, according to the Central Elections Committee.
